EDITH SAIR Edith Sair (nee Lucow) died peacefully at the Sharon Home on December 28, 2005 surrounded by her caring nurses and photos of her daughter Beatty Cohan and son-in-law Elliot of Sarasota, Florida and granddaughter Jordana Zeldin, 22, a student at the University of East Anglia in Norwich, England. Her devoted and loving husband Maurice and sisters Clara Schik and Sarah Rosen, and brothers Sol Lucow and Maurice Lucow all predeceased her. She was a loving and generous aunt to all of her nieces and nephews. She was a devoted sister-in-law to Marion Lucow who resides in Victoria and to Bessie Lucow of Edmonton, Ruth and Louis Sair of Chicago, and Pearl Sair and Esther and Sam Sair of Winnipeg who predeceased her. My mother was born in Russia and the family immigrated to Canada when she was a little girl and settled in Strathclair. My mother's teaching career began in a one room schoolhouse. She later moved to Winnipeg to attend Normal School and there she met my father through his sister Pearl Sair. My mother taught at the Talmud Torah for many years, where she was loved and respected by all of her students. She gave generously to a variety of organizations, including UJA, Hadassah, ORT, Canadian Mental Health and the Canadian Cancer Society. She started a scholarship fund at the Talmud Torah in my father's name and until the last few years would joyfully present the deserving student with his/her prize. My mother (and father) gave me every possible opportunity, including dancing, singing, skating, tennis, badminton and music lessons. My mom would stand in the cold in the Olympic Rink, watching me perform my spins and turns and would sew my costumes for my various recitals. Although she was very strict at times, she would stay up with me night after night, helping me to learn my timetables and study for my exams. I always knew that I could count on her and I will miss her greatly. Many thanks to the wonderful staff at the Sharon Home and to the Manitoba Home Care Workers. Because of their excellent care and the great devotion of her sister Clara, my mother was able to stay in her own apartment until April 2005. Special thanks to Melanie, Diana, Barbara, Werner and Timilee Thompson. I will never forget how wonderful you have been to my mother and to my family for the past seven years. In lieu of flowers, I know that my mother would appreciate that all donations be made to the Maurice Sair Talmud Torah Scholarship Fund. My mother will be buried beside my father at the Shaarey Zedek Cemetery. The graveside service will take place on Friday, December 30 at 1:00 p.m. Rabbi Weitzman will officiate. A reception will follow immediately following the burial.

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • Mrs. Sair was my Grade 4 teacher at Talmud Torah. That would have been the 1957-58 school year. She taught me how to spell "circumference" and how to calculate it. I was mathematically inclined, and she encouraged that. And her daughter Beatty was my contemporary all those many years ago. It's high time I paid this small tribute to a fine educator and a warm human being. - Posted by: Avrum Rosner (Student) on: Feb 12, 2015
